What a huge honor to have won this challenge! 100's of hours into this crazy quilt. The challenge was to include stars from Deb Tucker's Star 60 ruler with the 60 degree triangles based on the One Block Wonder technique. Layer 6 exactly same fabrics, cut strips 3 3/4" wide and then cut 60 degree triangles. The trick is in the arrangement! Sew 3 triangles together 2 times as these will be sewn together in columns-just make sure to keep them lined up!
The original fabric always presents a surprise when cut up
I thought the cubes would look great with all the colors in the original fabric, but didn't work. So off the wall they came!
It's always a good idea to lay out the hexies to see what colors you end up with and how they play together.
See the star in the center of each hexies? Then another hexie surrounding that hexie? I then inserted 2 black triangles to add the look of more stars.
The "holes" are a result of the 60 degree triangle hexies. So this is where I filled in with stars. The outside black were half a hexagon to make the large hexies appear to float.
3 triangles sewn together, then into columns. It takes a bit of concentration to keep the other half of the 3 triangles with each other!
Then the fun begins with free motion quilting. I kinda went crazy!!
I added a different motif in each star/hexie.
